Bob Taylor

NEW (added 9 June 2021)

Sadly we have more dreadful news.  Bob Taylor, a member of the quiz league for many years, passed away in late May.  Bob’s friend and

and former team-mate Les Williams has these words on Bob’s long and distinguished quiz career…

“Bob joined the Pineapple team (Heaton Lane) in the 1986/87 season and was a member of the team that won the A Division in ‘92/93.

Bob was an all-rounder with a particular strength in natural history - there wasn't much he didn't know about British birds.  Bob liked to gently

wind-up the opposition.  When, on one occasion, I mentioned to him that his ribbing was having no effect as the opposition knew him too well

and weren't biting, he said that he was aware of that but did it anyway as he thought it made him play better!  Bob stopped playing for a

couple of years until latterly joining the Printers team.  The Printers team folded a couple of years ago when the new landlord didn't show any

enthusiasm for having a quiz team.  Bob launched his 'TV' quiz career in the ‘90s.  He made three appearances on Quiz Night on ITV,

The Great British Quiz on BBC1 and got to the last three in an episode of Fifteen to One.  He was also good at setting quizzes at the

appropriate level for the target audience and an excellent quizmaster”.

Due in no small part to his ‘no nonsense’ approach to quizzing Bob was always a pleasure to play against, and from the opposition table

appeared to be the beating heart of the Printers team.  As a member of the committee Bob made a hugely valuable contribution to the running

of the league, not least his great efforts to raise our profile within the local community in an attempt to attract new teams and members.

Bob will be greatly missed by everyone in the Stockport Quiz League.

Jim Beeson

(added 23 April)

We have been contacted by Reg Williams of the Travellers Call with the terribly sad news that Jim Beeson passed away at Easter, after a

brave fight against cancer.  Many of you will have fond memories of Jim, who was a long-standing member of the Travellers team and always

a pleasure to play against.  From the opponents’ table Jim appeared to be a formidable quizzer and always played with a smile on his face.

Jim will be hugely missed by his mates in the Travellers team and his many other friends throughout the league.

Coronavirus update

(added 23 April)

There is obviously little prospect of quiz league activities resuming in the near future.  For quizzing to become feasible again we’ll have to wait

until things have returned to something approaching normality.
